What caused the fatal Nepal floods after a massive glacier collapse?

Researchers believe a glacier segment measuring roughly 2,000 feet across detached close to the Nepal-Tibet border, dropping nearly 4,000 feet into the valley below and causing devastating flash floods. The impact of the ice and debris dammed the Lhende Khola river, triggering a violent rush of water and sediment. Downstream, water levels surged by as much as nine metres in just half an hour.
