West Bengal rolls out digital penalties for littering and spitting

Starting September 1, West Bengal has officially launched a digital fine system to tackle public hygiene issues. Under these new rules, individuals will be charged ₹100 for spitting in public spaces, while littering or improper waste disposal will attract a ₹200 penalty. Additionally, open urination or defecation, as well as the use of prohibited single-use plastic bags thinner than 125 microns, will also result in a ₹200 fine. Designated civic officials will manage the collection of these penalties using a mobile application that processes payments via QR codes.
