Using AI to protect elephants from train accidents in India
To curb elephant fatalities on train tracks, the Ministry of Railways has implemented an AI-powered monitoring system known as Gajraj Suraksha. This technology utilizes acoustic sensors and optical fibres to identify vibrations caused by elephants from as far as 200 metres away. By tracking the animals' movements live, the system notifies station masters, who subsequently alert train operators to reduce speed and prevent potential accidents.
