US universities face $3.4 billion revenue drop due to falling international enrollment
According to a NAFSA study, American higher education institutions could experience a decrease of 112,000 international students by the 2026-27 academic year. This shift is projected to cause a $3.4 billion loss in revenue and the elimination of 40,000 jobs across the country. As of July 2026, the count of Indian students in the US hit a 29-month low, totaling 338,230. The drop in overseas student numbers is being attributed to the implementation of more rigorous visa processing and stricter immigration policies under the Trump administration.
