Nepal is currently at risk of further flooding following the breach of a barrier lake located in Tibet. According to the US Geological Survey, a barrier lake is a short-term body of water created when debris from a landslide obstructs the flow of a river or stream. These lakes have the capacity to store vast quantities of water, and should they burst, they can discharge millions of cubic metres, leading to devastating floods in downstream areas.
