The story behind the elephant at The Oval 55 years ago

On August 24, 1971, Indian supporters walked a three-year-old elephant named Bella from Chessington Zoo into The Oval. The event happened on the last day of India's landmark Test match against England, which also fell on the festival of Ganesh Chaturthi. Hemu Adhikari, the Indian team manager, called the elephant's presence a positive sign. India went on to successfully chase the 173-run target, securing their first-ever Test and series win in England.
