In 1941, a glacial lake burst in Huaraz, Peru, resulting in 5,000 deaths. Later, in 1962, a giant ice mass detached from the highest peak in Peru, claiming 4,000 lives in Ranrahirca. The most lethal glacier-linked tragedy occurred in Yungay, Peru, in 1970, where 25,000 people perished. Comparable events also took place in Tibet during 1981 and in India in 2021.
