Taiwan sees crab population surge thanks to bamboo bridges and traffic restrictions

Volunteers have constructed bamboo bridges and implemented road closures to safeguard Taiwan’s biggest land-dwelling crab species throughout their breeding period. Every year from July to September, female crabs travel from inland areas toward the ocean to release their eggs, a journey that frequently puts them at risk of being hit by cars. These protective efforts have successfully boosted the yearly crab count, rising from a previous average of 5,000 to over 10,000 recorded last year.
