Supreme Court grants relief to 27 people labeled foreigners in Assam, mandates fair process

On Monday, the Supreme Court overturned a Gauhati High Court ruling that had confirmed 27 people in Assam as foreigners. The top court emphasized that the procedure for verifying citizenship or labeling someone a foreigner must be conducted fairly. Furthermore, the court directed that no forceful measures should be taken against these 27 individuals until the tribunals conduct a fresh hearing.
