Supreme Court asks Centre to respond to petition against Muslim polygamy
The Supreme Court has requested the government's stance on a legal challenge that aims to outlaw polygamy within the Muslim community and provide better legal protections for Muslim women. The case was brought forward by Zakia Soman, who helped establish the Bharatiya Muslim Mahila Andolan. The filing also requests that polygamy be made a criminal offense and asks for legal and monetary security for women who are left behind when their husbands enter into subsequent marriages.
