In 2026, at least 43 teenage boys passed away and many more suffered mutilations during the Xhosa community's traditional circumcision rite, known as Ulwaluko, in South Africa. These fatalities were linked to untrained individuals performing procedures with non-sterile tools at unauthorized camps in the bush. Records indicate that more than 1,000 cases of penile amputation have occurred over the past ten years.
