Shubman Gill breaks Virat Kohli’s record for most WTC runs by an Indian skipper

On Sunday, Shubman Gill overtook Virat Kohli to set a new record for the highest run tally by an Indian captain in one World Test Championship (WTC) cycle. During the second Test match against Sri Lanka, Gill reached a total of 1,024 runs across 17 innings in the 2025-27 WTC period. In comparison, Kohli had recorded 934 runs over 24 innings throughout the 2019-21 cycle.
