Scientists observe formation of new oceanic crust in the Indian Ocean

For the first time, experts have documented the creation of a fresh piece of Earth's oceanic crust. This geological phenomenon took place in April 2024 and was captured by over 20 monitoring stations positioned across a 100-km area of the Indian Ocean. Over a period of 16 days, the crust expanded by almost 2 metres, resulting in 160 million cubic metres of lava erupting onto the ocean floor.
