Rules for PPF accounts after gaining NRI status or foreign citizenship

If you are an Indian resident who becomes an NRI, you are permitted to keep contributing to your current PPF account until it reaches its 15-year maturity date, but you cannot extend it further. Conversely, if you obtain foreign citizenship, you must close your account right away. Once citizenship changes, the account no longer accrues the regular PPF interest rate; instead, it earns the interest rate applicable to Post Office Savings Accounts until the account is officially shut down.
