Researchers successfully create synthetic cell

A team led by Professor Kate Adamala at the University of Minnesota has developed SpudCell, a synthetic, cell-like structure created entirely from identified chemical parts. This system is composed of a lipid membrane, 36 purified enzymes, and a genome consisting of 90,000 base pairs distributed over nine DNA molecules. According to the researchers, SpudCell is capable of growing, replicating its own genome, dividing, and participating in competition and selection processes over multiple generations.
