Researchers record rare footage of living 125-million-year-old goblin shark
For the first time, researchers have successfully filmed a 125-million-year-old goblin shark in its deep-sea environment. The discovery has expanded the species' documented depth range, moving it from 1,200 metres down to 2,000 metres. Footage of one shark was captured close to Jarvis Island in the Central Pacific, and a second was documented near the Tonga Trench. Goblin sharks remain the sole living representatives of their prehistoric shark lineage.
