Researchers identify molecular switch in autophagy protein LC3

A team of scientists from CSIR-IGIB, UC USA, and Ashoka University has revealed that the LC3 protein functions as a molecular switch. It only activates when it touches cell membranes, which then initiates autophagy, the process cells use to recycle waste. This discovery may pave the way for developing specific treatments for conditions like cancer, Alzheimer's, and Parkinson's, which are often associated with the body's inability to clear out cellular debris.
