Research shows bacteria can transform toxic uranium into stable form

New research reveals that certain bacteria are capable of turning dissolved uranium found in water into a stable chemical substance when fed glycerol. During the study, the uranium shifted into a stable pentavalent state known as uranium(V). The bacteria successfully absorbed the hazardous uranium into their cell walls. These findings may assist in future efforts to utilize bacteria for cleaning up contaminated environments.
