Research reveals seniors have a knack for predicting their own lifespan

A preprint study from the University of Tsukuba released in August 2026 suggests that older adults in Japan are fairly accurate at predicting how long they will live, even though 59% of them tend to underestimate their longevity. By examining data spanning 28 years, the research team connected individual survival forecasts to actual lifespans while accounting for health and demographic factors. Many participants based their estimates on national benchmarks, such as age 80, showing a grounded, practical understanding rather than an exact biological prediction.
