Research reveals extinct American cheetahs were relatives of the puma

According to a study featured in 'Current Biology', the 'American cheetah' that inhabited the Canadian Arctic 30,000 years ago shared a close evolutionary link with today's pumas. By analyzing DNA from ancient fossils, scientists determined that American cheetahs and pumas are sister species that split from a common ancestor approximately 2.6 million years ago. The fossil evidence also indicates that these cheetahs consumed both fish and land-based herbivores.
