Research indicates cleaner air could be increasing European temperatures

According to a report in Geophysical Research Letters, efforts to improve air quality might be contributing to rising heat in Europe. The research explains that for many years, sulphate aerosols released by coal-fired power stations blocked sunlight, which helped maintain summer temperatures roughly 1°C cooler. Since the implementation of stricter air quality regulations across the continent, this pollution has decreased, allowing more solar radiation to hit the ground and accelerating the warming trend.
