Proposed changes to UPI: What is the Merchant Discount Rate?

The Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) is a charge that businesses pay to banks or payment platforms whenever a customer completes a digital transaction. This fee is divided between the bank that issued the card, the merchant's bank, and the UPI network. Currently, the Finance Ministry is looking to scrap the rule that prevents banks and payment providers from applying MDR to UPI payments.
