Over 4,000 West Bengal schools have zero students but employ 19,502 teachers
Data from UDISE+ 2025-26 reveals that West Bengal currently has 4,133 schools that lack any enrolled students, yet these institutions are staffed by 19,502 teachers. Additionally, the state operates 6,769 schools that rely on a single teacher to educate 2,29,569 students. Out of the 5,663 schools nationwide with no student enrollment, approximately 73% are located in West Bengal. The report further notes that Uttar Pradesh follows in second place with 313 such schools, which have 177 teachers assigned to them.
