Around 66 million years ago, a six-mile-wide asteroid known as Chicxulub hit the area currently identified as Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula, leading to the extinction of the dinosaurs. According to a recent study, the collision wiped them out in a matter of hours. This happened as vaporized rock turned into small "spherules" that fell back down to the surface. The report further notes that the strike caused a massive heat wave and created a dense layer of dust around the globe that held in the heat.
