Mutual funds become the top choice for Indians investing in stocks

A report by JM Financial indicates that Indian families are choosing mutual funds over direct stock market investments to build their equity portfolios. Data shows that mutual fund ownership in domestic firms climbed to 11.3% in FY26, up from 10.2% in FY25 and 3.4% in FY14. During the same period, direct shareholding by the public dropped to 9.4%. Additionally, the total number of mutual fund folios saw a 16.8% increase, reaching 274 million in FY26.
