The Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train initiative may experience a cost surge of ₹40,000 crore due to increased compensation payouts for landowners in Gujarat, according to details shared by the project authority with the Gujarat High Court. In a specific instance, the Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Authority raised the compensation rate for a plot from the 2020 price of ₹50 per square meter to ₹660 per square meter. This adjustment increased the total payout for that land parcel from ₹85.86 lakh to ₹8.46 crore.
