Lok Sabha approves bill to strengthen birth and death registration norms

On Friday, the Lok Sabha gave its approval to the Registration of Births and Deaths (Amendment) Bill, 2026. Under the new rules, any birth or death reported more than two years after the event can only be registered if a first-class judicial magistrate issues an order. For cases delayed by one to two years, authorization must be obtained from an executive magistrate, sub-divisional magistrate, or district magistrate.
