Julie, Portugal's final circus elephant, retired after 40 years

Julie, the last elephant held in a Portuguese circus, has been released and is now the inaugural resident at the Pangea sanctuary. Originally brought from Southern Africa as a calf, she began her career with the Cardinali circus in 1988 and spent four decades in the ring. Her performances ended following the 2024 national prohibition on using wild animals in circus acts.
