Japan plans to establish a backup capital city

Japan has moved to identify a secondary capital city following the passage of a bill in July. This legislation permits the government to designate one or more areas to serve as a backup capital in the event that Tokyo is hit by a natural disaster. Official projections indicate a 70% probability of a magnitude-7 earthquake occurring in the Tokyo region over the next 30 years. Should such a crisis arise, the alternative capital would be prepared to assume essential political and economic responsibilities.
