Jaisalmer camel herder honored for reviving 7,575 hectares of community pasture
Sumer Singh Bhati, a camel herder based in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, has been presented with the 2026 Rangeland Restoration Award. He was recognized for his efforts in preserving the Degrai Mata Oran, a communal grazing area spanning approximately 7,575 hectares within the Thar Desert. Bhati brought together residents from 20 villages and spearheaded the 'Save Oran Padyatra' march to Jaipur to protest the conversion of the land for commercial use. This grassroots conservation initiative has successfully restored the ecosystem, providing vital support to 5,000 local families.
