ISMA: Panic buying drove sugar prices up, 35 lakh tons in reserve

Deepak Ballani, Director General of the Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA), stated that the recent hike in sugar prices was triggered by panic buying and is unrelated to ethanol production. He noted that India is set to finish the current marketing season with a stock of 35 lakh tons. Ballani explained that the belief that supplies might become scarce resulted in speculative purchasing.
