In 1984, Indira Gandhi visited Leh to end Sonam Wangchuk's father's 5-day fast

Sonam Wangyal, a former Congress leader and the father of activist Sonam Wangchuk, held a five-day hunger strike in Leh back in 1984. He was pushing for Ladakhis to be granted Scheduled Tribe status. The then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi traveled to Leh, promised that the request would be fulfilled, and offered him a soft drink to break his fast. Currently, Wangchuk has been fasting for nearly three weeks at Jantar Mantar in Delhi.
