Half of US Army's four-star generals gone during Hegseth's tenure

Since Pete Hegseth assumed the role of Defence Secretary in January 2025, the US Army has seen its count of four-star generals cut in half. At the time Hegseth started, there were 10 active-duty four-star generals, a number that has since dropped to five. In April, Hegseth dismissed Chief of Staff Gen Randy George and has not yet appointed a successor. Additionally, he ousted three high-ranking officers who were considered potential replacements.
