Government clarifies pricing of E20 petrol compared to standard fuel

The Union Petroleum Ministry has provided an explanation regarding why E20 petrol—which contains 20% ethanol—does not cost less than E10 or regular petrol. The ministry pointed out that the costs for raw materials like sugarcane juice, molasses, maize, FCI rice, and damaged food grains have all risen between the 2021-22 and 2025-26 periods. Consequently, it stated that when global oil prices are at $70 per barrel, the production cost for E20 remains higher.
