Germany reports 5,120 fatalities linked to 2026 heatwave

In 2026, Germany saw 5,120 deaths attributed to heat, with the majority happening during a harsh heatwave in late June. Out of that figure, 4,270 of the victims were aged 75 or older. A higher number of women passed away compared to men, largely due to the fact that women represent a bigger portion of the elderly population. Western Europe experienced its warmest June ever, with temperatures climbing 3°C higher than the typical average.
