Geologists uncover the origins of the Chhattisgarh Basin

Researchers from the ISI and GSI have mapped out the 1.4-billion-year evolution of the Chhattisgarh Basin, located in the Bastar craton of Central India. By analyzing 450-meter-thick rock formations from the Chandarpur Group, the team determined that the area started as a turbulent continental rift. Over time, during the Mesoproterozoic era, it transformed into a shallow ancient sea.
