Former Syrian official sentenced to death for crimes against humanity
Atef Najib, a former high-ranking Syrian security figure, has received a death sentence alongside his cousin and former President Bashar al-Assad for committing crimes against humanity. Najib is largely viewed as the person who sparked the 2011 civil war after he severely tortured 15 school children for writing anti-government slogans in Daraa. It is reported that he told the victims' parents to stop looking for their children and simply have new ones.
