Former HPCL head clarifies ethanol blending does not reduce petrol prices
Former Hindustan Petroleum Chairman MK Surana has dismissed the belief that mixing ethanol into petrol leads to lower fuel costs. Surana explained that while ethanol is priced between ₹56.71 and ₹71 per litre, the ex-refinery cost of petrol sits at roughly ₹53 per litre. He noted that for Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs), the answer is clearly no, as ethanol is more expensive than petrol. He further described ethanol as a form of hedge for these companies.
