Consequences of missing the August 31 ITR filing deadline
For the assessment year 2026-27, the deadline for non-audit taxpayers to submit their ITR is August 31. If you fail to meet this date, you are permitted to submit a belated return up until December 31, 2026. However, be aware that a late penalty of ₹1,000 may apply for those with an income not exceeding ₹5 lakh. Additionally, filing your taxes past the official due date could result in interest charges on any outstanding tax amounts.
