CNG, hybrids and EVs outsell petrol cars in India for the first time

According to FADA figures, alternative fuel vehicles surpassed petrol and ethanol-powered cars in the Indian passenger vehicle market for the first time in August 2026. CNG, hybrid, and electric models captured a 41.95% market share, while petrol vehicles accounted for 40.85%. Total vehicle sales reached an all-time high of 24.23 lakh units during the month, marking a 17.51% increase compared to the previous year. Two-wheeler sales were the primary driver of this growth, rising 19.69% to reach 17.15 lakh units.
