Researchers have verified that Saxifraga candelabrum, a flowering plant native to China, is indeed carnivorous. Back in 1875, Charles Darwin hypothesized that two species of Saxifraga might consume insects, though he lacked the experimental evidence to confirm it. S. candelabrum traps insects using sticky hairs, breaks them down with the enzyme phosphatase, and then takes in the nutrients. This discovery marks the first time a member of the Saxifragales order has been officially classified as carnivorous.
