Centre updates Ganga floodplain definition, removes building ban

The central government has updated the definition of the 'active floodplain' for the Ganga and its tributaries, now classifying it as land that floods at least once in a five-year period. This change to the 2016 notification eliminates the rule that established a 'construction-free zone' and instead mandates that riverbanks be kept clean to curb pollution. Previously, the regulations strictly forbade any kind of building activity within these floodplain areas.
