Calcutta HC orders strict action against TTEs for selling train berths

The Calcutta High Court has directed the Railways to impose the highest possible penalties on Travelling Ticket Examiners (TTEs) who are caught selling vacant train seats as if they were vegetables in a market. The court noted that this corrupt practice led to the tragic death of a passenger who had been a victim of theft. The individual, who held an unreserved ticket, had managed to secure a berth only after paying a bribe to the TTEs.
