Bengaluru firm creates magnet-free EV motor to reduce reliance on Chinese rare earths
Vimag Labs, a startup based in Bengaluru, has engineered a software-driven electric motor that does away with the need for rare-earth minerals and magnets, helping to lower dependency on Chinese supply chains. According to the company, this new technology replaces permanent magnets with a combination of steel, copper coils, and software-managed electromagnets. The startup has already obtained five patents in India, secured $5 million in funding, and is currently conducting trials of these motors with major electric vehicle manufacturers.
