Bangladesh elects Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir as its new President
On Thursday, members of the Bangladeshi parliament chose Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, a veteran leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, to serve as the nation's new President. The 78-year-old politician won the election with a 255-to-88 vote, defeating Oli Ahmed, who represented the 11-party opposition alliance led by Jamaat-e-Islami. The election for the presidency was held following the resignation of Mohammed Shahabuddin, a close ally of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
