August 2024 marks India's hottest August in over a century
Data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) shows that this August was the country's warmest since records began in 1901. The average temperature hit 28°C, which is roughly 0.67°C higher than the typical long-term average. The agency also noted that average nighttime temperatures reached a 125-year high. The IMD linked the intense heat to a 16.3% shortfall in monsoon rains and warned that the emergence of El Niño conditions may lead to even higher temperatures.
