Assam researchers identify new plant species with potential cancer-fighting properties
A new plant species named Ophiorrhiza assamensis has been identified by researchers close to Satargaon Road, located in the Kamrup Metropolitan district of Assam. This perennial herb, which is part of the coffee family, was recorded by botanists Birina Bhuyan and Selim Mehmud. The plant is notable for containing camptothecin, a substance utilized in the production of cancer medications. Ophiorrhiza assamensis is characterized by its clusters of tiny white blossoms and large, ribbed foliage.
