Ancient 5-million-year-old palm fossil found in West Bengal

A team of scientists from the University of Calcutta, Sonarpur Mahavidyalaya, and Sidho Kanho Birsha University has discovered a well-preserved palm tree fossil dating back 5 million years in West Bengal. The specimen, identified as Palmoxylon mioflabellifer, was extracted from honeycomb lateritic soil deposits located in the western part of the state.
