Researchers from Stanford University and the Arc Institute utilized an AI tool called Evo to craft viral genomes that do not exist in the natural world, according to findings published in the journal Science. Out of roughly 300 laboratory-generated designs, 16 proved to be functional bacteriophages. These viruses target bacteria and pose no threat to humans. When combined, these engineered phages successfully eliminated drug-resistant E. coli, achieving results that naturally occurring phages could not replicate.
