A look at India's longest hunger strikes as Wangchuk's protest hits 21 days
Irom Sharmila, known as the Iron Lady of Manipur, maintained a hunger strike for 16 years to protest the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, ending it in August 2016. In 2011, Hindu monk Swami Nigamananda passed away following a 115-day protest against unauthorized sand mining along the Ganga river. Additionally, environmentalist Swami Gyan Swaroop Sanand died in October 2018 after fasting for 111 days to push for legal protections for the Ganga.
